Japanese Bamboo Matcha Whisk
Zoom image

Bamboo Matcha Whisk, or Chasen, for preparation of japanese powdered tea (Matcha). Essential for the japanese tea ceremony. This bamboo whisk size 80 is probably the most commonly used bamboo whisk . It is suitable for all powderes teas. With it, you can prepare both the Koicha (strong, thick tea), as well as the Usucha (thin tea).

In contrast to the white bamboo frequently used the black bamboo pipe has a black, sometimes dark violet hued skin, which gives the grip area of this matcha whisk a special look. The bristles themselves are white, because the black outer skin has been removed in this area.

  • Material: Black bamboo.
  • Total length: approx 10.5 cm.
  • Shaft Diameter: about 2.5 cm.
  • Head diameter: 6 cm.
  • Bristle number: about 76-82.

What means size 80?

The matcha whisk is skillfully handcrafted: The piece of bamboo tube is cut with a sharp, special knife repeatedly to carefully carve out the bristles. Depending on the thickness of the bamboo, this creates a Chasen with different numbers of bristles. Here, size 80 is not exactly 80 bristles. The actual number of outer bristles is about 76 to 82. In a size 120 whisk, it is about 90 to 96 The bamboo itself is slightly thicker on a 120 whisk than on a 80 one.

The size 80 matcha whisk offered here is always a good choice and is equally suitable for beginners as well as professionals

With a 80 Chasen, both thinner and thicker Matcha can be prepared.

Note on the use and storage: The matcha whisk comes in a plastic package . This package is only used for transportation and not for storage after use. Under no circumstances should the matcha whisk be kept in a moist condition in a sealed container.

The matcha whisk is an important accessory for the Matcha preparation. It won't last forever, but with good care an last a long time. To keep the Chasen in good condition, please take the following precautions:

  • Do not use a dry Chasen for whipping the Matcha, instead make the Chasen's bristles soft by gently moving it around in a matcha bowl filled with in hot water. You can feel the bristles become softer. This avoids breaking the bristles when stronger movements are used to whip the matcha.
  • After using the Chasen, let it dry. For this purpose there is a special stand, a Chasentate. There the bamboo whis can dry quickly. Even more importantly, the bristles always remain in optimal shape.

The whipping of the matcha is relatively simple: quite fast movements of the wrist, such as if writing a "M" is used to mix the matcha powder in hot water. This results in a fine, jade-green foam.
